Birmingham City were gifted a first home win in four Championship matches courtesy of a mind-boggling penalty decision against unfortunate Cardiff City.

James Vaughan’s shot blatantly struck Cardiff defender Matt Connolly in the face but referee David Coote pointed to the spot to the shock of the visitors.

Paul Caddis, who came off the bench midway through the first half, slotted past David Marshall from 12 yards on the cusp of the break for the only goal of the game.

Cardiff failed to truly respond from the setback but did have a couple of equalising chances, the best of which was poorly spurned by Newcastle United loanee Sammy Ameobi.

Birmingham hung on comfortably to seal their first home win in four games. They had recently lost to lowly Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town as well as local rivals Wolves at St Andrews.

Victory take Birmingham level with seventh-place Cardiff in the table. Both are within a point of the playoffs, but will have to improve greatly if they wish to remain in contention come May.
